I used the alley, when taking the bus into the town centre and on return from the town centre.
During the many years of using the alley, I noticed litter accumulating. Employees of Reading Borough Council visited regularly to remove the litter but, to my annoyance, the litter returns.
One day I, without any intention as to its end, began photographing the litter. A man, on a bicycle passing through the alley stopped and introduced himself as the artist ‘Improv’ (he places random objects in public areas).
Improv asked me my intended use of the images I was capturing. I hadn’t given it much thought. He suggested creating posters of the images and exhibiting them in the alley.
I thought his suggestion a great idea!
The public passing through the alley would see the images and, perhaps, respect the area.
I discussed the idea with my partner, who said he would be happy to paste the posters to the brick walls. So, at around 8pm, one October evening, we surreptitiously hung the posters.
I found it overwhelming to see my images in 20 inch squares; something I had never seen before…
